Assam: Rare Turtle Rescued and Released in Sonitpur District

Guwahati, 22nd June: In a heartwarming act of conservation, two youths from Tejalpatti village in Balijuri, Naduar, Sonitpur district, Assam, discovered a rare species of turtle and promptly alerted local nature enthusiast Arun Chawar. This discovery has stirred considerable community interest and admiration for efforts aimed at safeguarding endangered wildlife.

Upon receiving the news, Arun Chawar, assisted by Jayant Gautam, swiftly took action to rescue the rare turtle and provided a safe environment at his residence. Known for his dedication to nature, Chawar emphasized the critical importance of protecting such endangered creatures from potential threats.

“Our priority was to rescue and protect this rare species to prevent any harm from coming to it,” Chawar explained, underscoring the ongoing risks faced by vulnerable wildlife.

Following the successful safeguarding of the turtle, Chawar made the decision to release it into the expansive pond of Nagashankar Devalaya, a revered religious site renowned for its diverse turtle population. This step aimed to ensure the rare turtle finds a secure habitat among its kindred species.

The community has responded with heartfelt appreciation for Chawar and Gautam, lauding their exemplary efforts in wildlife conservation. Their proactive approach not only rescued a rare turtle but also highlighted the importance of collective action in preserving Assam’s rich biodiversity.
