Assam Records 15% Decline in Road Accident Fatalities, Announces CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on December 24 that the state has become the only major state in India to record a significant 15% decline in road accident fatalities. This achievement comes after the implementation of strict measures and directives aimed at improving road safety.
During a review meeting on road safety, CM Sarma credited the success to a focused crackdown on drunk driving, emphasizing the importance of the “No Drink and Drive” rule. The enforcement of this rule, especially through intensified checks in Guwahati after 10 PM, has been a key factor in reducing road mishaps.
To sustain the progress, the government plans to continue its road safety drive and monitoring program through the upcoming Magh Bihu festivities. The Excise Department has also been tasked with regulating late-night activities by exploring dynamic seasonal timings for bars.
Acknowledging the rising incidents in certain areas, authorities are fast-tracking infrastructure improvements, including the installation of streetlights, foot overbridges, and reflective patches along the Guwahati Bypass. The Public Works Department (PWD) is incorporating new provisions such as speed breakers, crash barriers, and fluorescent signage into road construction projects.
In addition, district police have been instructed to add reflective patches on the rear sides of commercial vehicles to enhance visibility. Police and district administrations are also launching extensive road safety campaigns on social media to raise public awareness.
To further enhance road safety, a vision testing initiative for commercial drivers is being rolled out, with corrective measures and treatment for those with impairments. Medical colleges and hospitals are being equipped to provide the best care for accident victims, with additional security for medical personnel in emergencies. Road safety awareness will also be promoted through videos and dramas at public events.
Finally, the state government is developing an SOP to ensure safety and cleanliness at popular picnic spots, involving all stakeholders in the process.
