Assam Records 15% Decline in Road Accident Fatalities, CM Sarma Credits Strict Safety Measures

Assam: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on December 24 that the state has become the only major state in India to record a significant 15% reduction in both road accidents and fatalities. This achievement comes after the implementation of stringent safety measures and directives issued during previous review meetings, according to state officials.

During a road safety review meeting, CM Sarma attributed the success to the rigorous enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly the crackdown on drunk driving. He highlighted the effectiveness of intensified checks after 10 PM in Guwahati and the strict enforcement of the “No Drink and Drive” rule, which have been crucial in reducing road mishaps.

To maintain this progress, the state government plans to continue its road safety initiatives through the Magh Bihu festivities. The Excise Department has been tasked with exploring dynamic seasonal timings for bars to better regulate late-night activities and further curb the risks of drinking and driving.

Among the key measures introduced, the government will mandate the installation of reflective patches on the rear sides of commercial vehicles to enhance visibility, with border district Superintendents of Police (SPs) overseeing the implementation. Additionally, vision testing for commercial drivers will be rolled out, with corrective measures and treatment available for those with vision impairments.

In response to growing safety concerns in certain areas, authorities are expediting the installation of streetlights, foot overbridges, and reflective patches along the Guwahati Bypass. The Public Works Department (PWD) is also incorporating speed breakers, crash barriers, and fluorescent signage into road-building plans to further improve safety.

To further engage the public, the state’s road safety awareness campaign will be conducted across social media platforms, emphasizing safe driving practices and educating the public on road safety.
