Assam records highest number of Crime against Women: NCRB

Guwahati: Assam recorded the highest number of Crimes against women in India for the fourth time in row.

According to the annual National Crime Record Bureau’s (NCRB) “Crime in India” 2020 report released on Wednesday, the crime rate against women in Assam was 154.3 per lakh compared to a national average of 56.5 per lakh.

The rate was calculated according to the number of crimes recorded in a population of every one lakh.

As per the local media reports, Chikimiki Talukdar, the Chairperson of Assam State Commission for Women said that the figures are alarming and required to be investigate properly and at the same time, “it could indicate that Assam has seen an increase in reporting, which has led to a rise in the number of cases.”

In Assam, the overall number of crimes against women in 2020 was 26,352 among which 1,657 were rape incidents, including 26 rape or gang rape killings. Assam is second only to Uttar Pradesh in terms of murder with rape/gang rape, with 31 such cases and Madhya Pradesh with 27.

Meanwhile, the rates of crimes against women in the other seven Northeastern states were lower than the national average. In 2020, Manipur’s crime rate against women was 15.8 per lakh, whereas Meghalaya’s was 34.9 per lakh, Mizoram’s was 28.8 per lakh, Nagaland’s was 3.7 per lakh, Tripura’s was 44 per lakh, and Sikkim’s was 44.2 per lakh.

However, the total number of crimes against women fell from 4,05,326 in 2019 to 3,71,503 last year in India.
