Assam Records Presence of Mithun, Boosting State’s Biodiversity
Guwahati, 10th September: In a notable development for Assam’s wildlife conservation efforts, the state has recorded the presence of the Mithun (Bos frontalis), a revered bovid species, in the hilly regions of Dima Hasao. Indigenous to the Himalayan foothills of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and other northeastern states, the Mithun is culturally significant, with historical references in the epic Mahabharata.
This sighting marks a significant enhancement in Assam’s biodiversity and highlights the state’s thriving natural habitats. The discovery underscores the positive outcomes of the Assam Forest Department’s ongoing conservation and management initiatives.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the Forest Department’s efforts in a post on X, stating, “Assam adds another faunal friend to its biodiversity 🙌 In another beautiful addition to our animal kingdom diversity, we have recorded the presence of Mithun (Bos Frontalis) in the hilly areas of Dima Hasao. This bovid species, native to Bharat’s Himalayan foothills in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, etc., and which finds mention in the Mahabharata, has now a new home in Assam. Kudos to our @assamforest Dept for its excellent work in protection, preservation, and management of our treasured forests.”
