Guwahati, 2nd July: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to the microblogging platform X to announce a significant milestone in the state’s education sector. He shared that out of the total 187,078 admissions in Assam’s colleges, 129,018 students have benefited from free admissions so far. He expressed optimism that this number would continue to rise as admissions progress further.
In his tweet, CM Himanta stated, “Happy to share that out of 187,078 admissions in our colleges so far, 129,018 students have benefited from free admissions. This number is set to increase as admissions continue.”
Highlighting the state government’s dedication to education, he added, “Few states in India show this level of support for the student community. Proud of our government’s commitment to education!”
Earlier, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu had disclosed on July 1 that over 71% of the more than 1.66 lakh students admitted to various colleges in the state have availed of the fee waiver scheme designed for economically disadvantaged families. Pegu also noted that the income threshold for eligibility has been raised from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 4 lakh per annum starting this year.
This initiative aims to ensure broader access to higher education for students from economically weaker sections, reflecting Assam’s proactive measures to support educational equity and opportunity.
