Dudhnoi, Assam – The Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) today marked the first death anniversary of the esteemed Padma Shri awardee and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Dr. Birubala Rabha, by solemnly observing it as “Anti-Superstition Day 2025.”
The poignant event unfolded at the RHAC Secretariat auditorium in Dudhnoi, witnessing the earnest involvement of community leaders, the recently elected council members, and representatives from various Rabha national organizations.
Dr. Birubala Rabha, an unforgettable social reformer, dedicated her life’s work to the critical cause of uprooting superstition and detrimental traditional practices, particularly within the rural and tribal landscapes of the region. Her demise is deeply felt as an irreplaceable void in the grassroots activism movement across India.
The day of remembrance commenced with a traditional ceremonial lamp-lighting before a portrait of Dr. Rabha, an act led by the RHAC Chairperson, Sonaram Rabha. Following this respectful gesture, Chief Executive Member Tankeswar Rabha offered a heartfelt floral tribute. Subsequently, the Vice-Chairperson, the Chief Secretary, and other distinguished members of the council also paid their respects.
Amidst the prevailing somber atmosphere due to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, the commemoration proceeded with profound dignity and introspection. Notable figures, including Dashanan Rabha, the President of the Sixth Schedule Demand Committee, shared insightful reflections on Dr. Rabha’s extraordinary life journey, her unwavering advocacy, and her pivotal role as a powerful voice for the often-overlooked segments of society.
The program further highlighted the enthusiastic engagement of the newly elected general members of the RHAC and key office bearers from numerous Rabha community organizations. Their active participation underscored a unified and resolute commitment to perpetuate Dr. Rabha’s vital mission against social ills deeply entrenched in ignorance and fear, ensuring her legacy of rationalism and social reform continues to inspire and guide the community.
