Assam Rifles Crack Down on Drug and Arms Networks in Northeast

Aizawl: In a major anti-narcotics operation, Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the Special Narcotics Police Station, Aizawl, seized methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 21 crore in Aizawl district on August 29. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, security forces intercepted a vehicle in the Zemabawk South area during the early hours, recovering 7 kg of meth tablets. Two individuals were arrested, and the vehicle was confiscated. The seized contraband, along with the accused, has been handed over to the Special Narcotics Police Station for further investigation.

In a separate operation, Assam Rifles dealt a significant blow to criminal networks in Manipur’s border region by apprehending an individual linked to the Village Volunteers Eastern Zone (VVEZ), allegedly involved in extortion and illegal arms trafficking. The joint Cordon and Search Operation was launched in Haolenphai, near the border town of Moreh in Tengnoupal district, on August 26.

Troops carried out a precise house-to-house search and apprehended the suspect, who was found in possession of a mobile phone believed to contain incriminating evidence related to extortion and weapons smuggling. The arrested person and the recovered device were handed over to Pallel Police Station on August 27 for interrogation and further legal action.

Officials said the twin operations highlight Assam Rifles’ continuing focus on dismantling drug cartels and arms trafficking networks in the vulnerable border regions of the Northeast.
