Assam Rifles Delivers Double Blow to Drug Trade in Mizoram, Seizing Rs 46 Crore Narcotics
Aizawl: In a significant triumph against the escalating drug menace, the Assam Rifles, acting on pinpoint intelligence, have executed two highly effective anti-narcotics operations in Mizoram this week, leading to the apprehension of three individuals and the seizure of illicit drugs valued at a staggering ₹46 crore in the international market. The successful interdictions underscore a heightened vigilance by security agencies in a region increasingly exploited as a conduit for cross-border drug smuggling.
The first major breakthrough occurred on July 26, when a dedicated team from the Assam Rifles conducted a meticulous search operation in the Melbuk, Zokhawthar area, situated precariously close to the Indo-Myanmar border. Their efforts bore fruit with the recovery of a substantial consignment: 1.041 kg of Heroin No. 4 and a massive haul of 9.381 kg of methamphetamine tablets. The combined street value of these narcotics is estimated to be approximately ₹40.05 crore. Following the seizure, the contraband has been promptly handed over to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for comprehensive investigation, as per official statements.
Just two days prior, on July 24, a meticulously planned operation in Tuikhuahtlang, Aizawl, saw another substantial dent made in the drug trade. Acting on crucial intelligence inputs, a joint task force comprising the Assam Rifles, Aizawl Police, and the Narcotics Department established a strategic vehicle check post. Their vigilance paid off when 1.97 kg of methamphetamine tablets, worth an estimated ₹6.6 crore, were discovered cleverly concealed within a vehicle. Consequently, three individuals linked to the illicit consignment were swiftly detained at the scene.
Officials have lauded both operations as exemplary instances of coordinated efforts and the critical role of timely intelligence gathering in combating organised crime. The trio of apprehended individuals have since been transferred to the custody of the Excise and Narcotics Department in Aizawl, where legal proceedings have been initiated against them. These decisive actions by security forces signal a clear message to drug traffickers that their nefarious activities will be met with resolute counter-measures in the region.
