Assam Rifles Foil Cross-Border Smuggling Attempt in Manipur’s Moreh

Northeast Desk, 4th September: In a significant operation, the Assam Rifles successfully intercepted and thwarted a cross-border smuggling attempt along the international border in Manipur’s Moreh. Acting on specific intelligence, the security forces launched an operation from September 1-2, 2024, targeting multiple locations along the Indo-Myanmar Border (IMB).

During the operation, the Assam Rifles personnel recovered a substantial quantity of contraband items. The seized goods included one sack containing clothes of various sizes, two sacks of Burmese Areca Nuts weighing 60 kg each, 380 packets of mosquito repellent, 96 cans of energy drinks, 40 packets of noodles, 120 kilograms of areca nuts valued at Rs 54,000, and 71 bottles of liquor. These items were found tied to a Kenbo Bike, which was also confiscated.

The Assam Rifles’ swift action prevented the illegal goods from being smuggled across the border, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat cross-border smuggling activities in the region. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, with further details expected to emerge as the inquiry progresses.

This operation follows another major bust by the Assam Rifles last month, where 1,20,000 Yaba tablets worth Rs 19.2 crore were seized in Agartala’s Salbagan. In that case, one individual was arrested, and a Bolero vehicle was confiscated as part of the operation. The consistent efforts of the Assam Rifles underscore their crucial role in maintaining security and preventing illegal activities along the Indo-Myanmar border.
