Assam Rifles Foils Massive Smuggling Bid, Seizes Rs 5.1 Crore Foreign Cigarettes in Tripura
Agartala, Tripura: In a significant blow to illegal cross-border trade, the Assam Rifles successfully intercepted and seized a colossal consignment of foreign-origin cigarettes valued at an estimated Rs 5.1 crores. The dramatic operation unfolded near the Chandrapur area in Agartala, following precise intelligence inputs.
Troops launched a meticulously planned and targeted operation, leading to the recovery of a staggering 170 cartons of banned foreign cigarettes. It is strongly suspected that these contraband goods were illicitly smuggled across the porous Indo-Bangladesh border, intended for distribution within the region.
Following the successful seizure, the entire cache of contraband was promptly handed over to the Customs Department. Officials there have initiated further investigations and will pursue appropriate legal proceedings against those involved in this large-scale smuggling attempt.
A senior official from the Assam Rifles reiterated the force’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal cross-border activities. The official emphasized that this operation underscores their relentless efforts to safeguard India’s economic security and disrupt the flow of illicit goods. The Assam Rifles continues to maintain stringent vigilance across border areas, particularly in the smuggling-prone zones that dot the northeastern region, reaffirming their dedication to national security.
This substantial seizure not only represents a major triumph in curbing the influx of contraband but also powerfully illustrates the critical importance of intelligence-driven, coordinated operations along the international border in maintaining regional stability and economic integrity.
