Assam Rifles, Mizoram Police Nab Myanmar National in Massive Drug Bust

Zokhawthar, Champhai: In a significant blow to cross-border drug trafficking, the Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Mizoram Police, have seized Methamphetamine tablets valued at over ₹6.67 crore and apprehended a Myanmar national in Zokhawthar village, Champhai district, East Mizoram. The successful operation, carried out on June 29, underscores the persistent efforts of security forces to curb the illicit narcotics trade in the region.

Acting on precise intelligence inputs, a combined team of Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police personnel swiftly established a check post at Zokhawthar, a known transit point along the India-Myanmar border. Their vigilance paid off when they intercepted a suspicious individual during a thorough search operation. Upon inspection, the individual was found to be carrying 20,200 Methamphetamine tablets, collectively weighing approximately 2.22 kilograms. The estimated street value of these seized narcotics is a staggering ₹6.67 crore, as confirmed by official sources.

The arrested individual has been identified as a Myanmar national, highlighting the continued use of Mizoram as a conduit for drug smuggling from across the border. The seized contraband, a prohibited psychotropic substance in India, has been handed over to the Zokhawthar Police Station. Authorities have initiated further legal proceedings and launched an in-depth investigation to trace the origins and wider network involved in this substantial drug haul. Methamphetamine, often referred to as “meth” or “ice,” is a highly addictive stimulant with severe ramifications for the central nervous system, and its trafficking and consumption are stringently prohibited under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
