Assam Rifles Refutes Allegations of Illegal Immigrants in Manipur
Northeast Desk, 19th June: The Assam Rifles has strongly refuted allegations by Naga civil bodies and organisations regarding the presence of illegal immigrants in Manipur. These allegations were included in a memorandum submitted to Home Minister Amit Shah by various Naga groups, including the United Naga Council (UNC), Naga Women’s Union (NWU), All Naga Students Association Manipur (ANSAM), and Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights (NPM-HR). The memorandum called for the repatriation of alleged illegal migrants from Myanmar and the withdrawal of Assam Rifles from the Indo-Myanmar border regions around Kamjong in Manipur.
In response, Assam Rifles clarified in a letter, “In the said area, extending from BP 82 to 89, some refugees have indeed taken shelter due to warlike situations in Myanmar. However, they are immediately repatriated as the security situation improves across the IMB. The accommodation arrangements for the refugees comprise self-help, bare essential thatched huts with polythene covers.”
Assam Rifles emphasized the role of the state administration in monitoring the situation, noting that biometric data of the refugees has been collected. “The State Administration is fully aware of the presence of refugees in the area and has collected biometric data. Proper coordination in terms of security exists between the Security Forces and the State Administration. Security Forces maintain a vigilant presence and are actively managing the border area to prevent any unlawful activities,” the statement added.
The Assam Rifles’ clarification aims to address concerns raised by the Naga civil bodies and reassure the public and authorities about the measures being taken to handle the refugee situation and maintain border security.
