Aizawl: In a major anti-smuggling operation near the India-Myanmar border, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Mizoram Police and Customs officials, seized foreign cigarettes and Burmese areca nuts worth ₹8 crore in two separate operations.
The seizures took place in Mizoram’s Champhai and Lawngtlai districts on December 18.
Based on specific intelligence, Assam Rifles troopers intercepted 600 cases of foreign cigarettes smuggled from Myanmar in the Cherhlun area of Lawngtlai district.
The contraband, valued at ₹7.8 crore, was handed over to the state police in Thingsai village, located in the neighboring Hnahthial district, for further action.
In a parallel operation, the Assam Rifles, along with Customs officials, recovered 4,400 kg of smuggled Burmese areca nuts in the Hmuhmeltha area of Champhai district. The consignment, valued at ₹30.8 lakh, was handed over to the Customs preventive force in Champhai for legal proceedings.
These operations reflect the Assam Rifles’ continued vigilance and commitment to curbing cross-border smuggling activities in the region. Both cases are under investigation to identify the networks involved in the illegal trade.
