Agartala: In a major crackdown on smuggling, Assam Rifles confiscated 195 cartons of smuggled foreign cigarettes worth approximately ₹1.95 crore in Tripura’s Khowai district.
Acting on intelligence inputs, the security forces, in collaboration with the police, conducted a joint operation that led to the seizure of the contraband.
The confiscated items have been handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation and legal proceedings.
An official statement from Assam Rifles highlighted the force’s commitment to curbing illegal trade activities and enhancing security vigilance in the region. Smuggling of foreign cigarettes has been a growing concern in the Northeast, with authorities ramping up efforts to intercept such consignments.
In a separate operation, the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Agartala Railway Station discovered six abandoned bags containing 37 kilograms of dry ganja during a routine inspection. The unclaimed narcotics were immediately seized following legal procedures, and an investigation was launched to trace the owner and intended recipients of the illicit consignment.
According to the GRP, the estimated market value of the seized ganja is ₹5.55 lakh. Authorities are now intensifying efforts to track the supply chain and prevent the trafficking of illegal substances in the region. The back-to-back operations highlight the heightened vigilance of law enforcement agencies in Tripura, as they continue to combat smuggling and illegal drug trade.
