Champhai, Mizoram – In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Assam Rifles seized methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 173.73 crore along the India-Myanmar border in Mizoram’s Champhai district.
The successful bust underscores the ongoing efforts to curb cross-border drug trafficking in the region.
Acting on intelligence inputs, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with Mizoram Police, conducted a joint operation at a border crossing point in Zokhawthar on February 9.
During the operation, the personnel intercepted a suspicious consignment being carried by unidentified individuals. Sensing the presence of security forces, the suspects abandoned the illicit cargo and fled the scene before they could be apprehended.
The seized consignment, weighing approximately 57.9 kg, consisted of methamphetamine tablets, a highly addictive stimulant drug.
Authorities have taken custody of the recovered contraband for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Officials confirmed that the operation was part of an intensified crackdown on drug trafficking networks operating along the porous Indo-Myanmar border. Security forces have been on high alert due to an increase in smuggling activities in recent months, with narcotics syndicates using Mizoram as a transit point for illegal substances.
The Assam Rifles, known as the “Sentinels of the Northeast,” have been actively working to dismantle drug smuggling routes, particularly in Mizoram, which has witnessed a surge in narcotics-related activities. The latest seizure marks a significant blow to organized crime syndicates operating in the region.
Authorities have launched a probe to trace the origin and intended recipients of the smuggled consignment. Meanwhile, security agencies continue to ramp up surveillance along the border to prevent further illegal activities.
