Assam Schools Implement Safety Measures Amid Heat Wave: “Water Bell” and Revised Schedules Introduced
Guwahati, 23rd May: In response to the severe heat wave sweeping through the region, the Elementary Education Department of Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan District has introduced new guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of students. Schools have been instructed to ring a “water bell” three times a day and to conduct morning assemblies indoors.
This directive, issued by the Inspector of Schools, Kamrup Metro, aims to keep students hydrated and prevent heat-related health issues such as excessive sweating and headaches. The order mandates that schools ring the water bell thrice daily as a reminder for students to drink water. Additionally, morning assemblies are to be held inside classrooms or in shaded areas like verandas, rather than in open spaces.
Further measures have been implemented in the districts of Nagaon and Lakhimpur, where school schedules have been adjusted to mitigate the effects of the extreme heat. Starting May 23, schools in Nagaon will commence at 8:00 a.m., with lower primary schools operating until 12:30 p.m., middle schools until 1:00 p.m., and high schools and higher secondary classes until 1:30 p.m. These changes apply to both public and private institutions.
Similarly, in Lakhimpur District, classes will begin at 7:30 a.m. from May 23. Lower primary schools will run until 12:00 p.m., middle schools until 12:30 p.m., and high schools and higher secondary classes until 1:00 p.m.
These proactive measures are designed to safeguard students’ health and ensure that educational activities can continue safely during the heat wave. The emphasis on hydration and revised school timings reflects the authorities’ commitment to student welfare amidst challenging weather conditions.
