Assam: Security Forces Disband Nascent Militant Group in Kokrajhar-Chirang Forests

Guwahati, 13th August: In a significant operation deep within the dense forests of Kokrajhar-Chirang, Assam, security forces successfully intercepted and disbanded a newly-formed militant group that had been covertly organizing over the past three to four months. The operation culminated in the peaceful surrender of the group’s members and the recovery of a substantial cache of weapons.

The group, comprising at least 20 young individuals, had been attempting to establish a militant presence in the region. However, after a series of negotiations led by the authorities, the members were persuaded to abandon their militant ambitions and surrender their weapons.

The surrendered arsenal includes six automatic rifles, four single-shot rifles, three pistols with magazines, five No. 36 high-explosive grenades, 54 rounds of AK rifle ammunition, and nine rounds of pistol ammunition.

Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh lauded the operation’s success on social media. He stated, “Another success for @assampolice. In Kokrajhar-Chirang forests, we’ve been able to intercept and bring out a group of 20 youths who had been trying to form a new militant group since the last three/four months. They’ve listened to reason and come out and handed over the weapons held by them.”

DGP Singh also praised the painstaking efforts of the Kokrajhar Police, emphasizing the state’s commitment to maintaining peace and eradicating violence. “Compliments to @KokrajharP for their hard work. We strive to keep our state free of weapons and violence,” he added.

This operation marks a significant step in Assam’s ongoing efforts to maintain security and prevent the rise of militancy in the region.
