Assam: Senior Journalist from Dibrugarh Falls Victim to Online Fraud Scheme
Guwahati, 8th August: A senior journalist from Assam’s Dibrugarh has become the latest victim of an online fraud scheme. Ratul Bura Gohain reported that imposters created fake Facebook and Instagram accounts using his name and photographs to deceive his contacts.
Starting early Monday, the fraudsters contacted approximately 200 of Gohain’s friends and followers, soliciting financial assistance through messages sent from these counterfeit accounts. The scammers requested various amounts of money, including Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000, and Rs 8,000, under false pretenses, claiming repayment would follow.
The fraudulent messages were sent under the guise of “Google Press” and included a contact number, 8795839779. Despite Gohain filing a complaint with the Cyber Crime Investigation Wing at the Dibrugarh Sadar police station on Tuesday, the scam continues. The perpetrators are using multiple languages—English, Bengali, and Assamese—to extend their reach.
This incident has not only damaged Gohain’s public reputation but also caused significant emotional distress and disruption to his daily life.
