Assam: Seven Arrested and Large Quantity of Contraband Drugs Seized in Barak Valley

In a major crackdown, Assam Police have arrested seven individuals and seized a significant quantity of contraband drugs in separate operations across Barak Valley, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday.

The operations, conducted on Saturday, were based on the police’s robust intelligence network. In Karimganj, police raided a shop and confiscated nearly 800 kg of ganja, arresting one person. Meanwhile, Cachar Police carried out two successful operations, seizing 1.9 kg of heroin and apprehending six individuals.

Chief Minister Sarma, sharing the details on X (formerly Twitter), praised the police efforts, stating that these operations are crucial in dismantling the drug nexus in the state. He reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to the ongoing “War on Drugs” initiative, which aims to eliminate the threat of drug trafficking and protect the state’s youth.

Since Sarma assumed office on May 10, 2021, until May 15, 2024, the authorities have registered 8,855 cases related to drug offenses and arrested 14,593 individuals involved in drug-related activities. The seizures have been substantial, including 432 kg of heroin, 105,567 kg of cannabis, 453 kg of opium, and over 1.1 million bottles of codeine cough syrup. Additionally, a significant number of tablets and capsules, totaling 123,512,298, have been confiscated.

Sarma emphasized the government’s relentless efforts to combat drug trafficking and vowed to continue the fight against this menace that threatens the well-being of Assam’s society.
