Assam: Severe Flooding in West Karbi Anglong District Due to Hydropower Project Water Releases
Guwahati, 29th May: Severe flooding has struck the region of West Karbi Anglong district following the release of water through five gates of the Karbilangpi Hydropower Project and seven gates of the Khandang Hydropower Project. This release, triggered by a recent cyclone and incessant rains, has caused the Kopili and Borpani rivers to overflow, resulting in widespread inundation.
The Ramani field along the Borpani river has been particularly affected, with floodwaters submerging the area. Several villages, including Juripar and Shimluguri, have been heavily impacted, with water entering many homes and causing extensive damage to personal property and household items.
The flooding has also severely disrupted traffic, rendering roads impassable and halting transportation in the affected areas. In response to the rising water levels, many residents have been forced to evacuate their homes, seeking refuge in safer locations and leaving behind their belongings.
Local authorities are actively managing rescue and relief operations to assist those displaced by the floods. Emergency services are on the ground, providing necessary aid and ensuring the safety of the residents. However, the ongoing heavy rains and the potential for further water releases from the hydropower projects continue to pose significant risks to the community.
Authorities urge residents to stay updated on the latest weather and flood warnings, and to follow all safety advisories to protect themselves and their families during this challenging time.
