Assam shines in NE Games 2024 with 40 Gold and 50 Silver Medals
Sports Desk, 24th March: Assam showcased remarkable prowess in various sports disciplines, securing the third position in the medal standings at the “North East Games 2024” held in Nagaland. The event, spanning from March 18 to March 23, witnessed Assam’s stellar performance.
The Assamese contingent clinched an impressive tally of 40 gold medals and 50 silver medals, underscoring their depth of skill and determination. Notably, the Assam boxing squad displayed exceptional prowess, securing four gold medals, five silver medals, and six bronze medals.
In wrestling, athletes from Assam demonstrated remarkable talent and resilience. Pritima Khaklary secured a silver medal in the 53kg category, while Domoni Uzir and Anisha Basumutary claimed bronze medals in the 55kg and 59kg categories, respectively.
Ashik Pingua added another silver medal in the 57kg category, with Basanta Patgiri and Ranjoy Daimary contributing bronze medals in the 61kg and 79kg weight classes, respectively. With these achievements, Assam’s wrestling medal tally reached two silver and four bronze medals.
Additionally, the Assam Women’s Basketball Team’s outstanding teamwork and perseverance earned them a bronze medal.
The Assam Olympic Association (AOA) extended heartfelt appreciation to the state’s athletes for their remarkable feat. With 90% of the athletes being novices from Assam, AOA General Secretary Lakhya Konwar expressed satisfaction with their performance, emphasizing the endeavor to groom future stars.
“Only 10 per cent experienced athletes were selected to represent the state keeping in mind to groom the future stars. I must say, the young boys and girls have really performed well,” Konwar remarked.
Manipur secured the top spot in the medal tally with 52 gold, 38 silver, and 40 bronze medals, while hosts Nagaland finished second with 48 gold, 42 silver, and 44 bronze medals.
