Assam, Sikkim Team Up to Boost Northeast Tourism

Guwahati, Assam — In a landmark move set to redefine tourism in Northeast India, Assam and Sikkim are joining forces to create integrated travel packages that showcase the best of both states. The initiative, hailed as a game-changer for the region’s economy, aims to offer tourists a seamless blend of wildlife, nature, and adventure.

The plan was solidified during a key meeting in Guwahati between Nosang Limboo, Officer on Special Duty to a Member of Parliament from Sikkim, and Nirmalya Chaudhary, Chairman of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), North East Region. Their discussions focused on stitching together the unique strengths of each state—Assam’s famed wildlife sanctuaries and serene river cruises with Sikkim’s breathtaking Himalayan vistas and thrilling adventure sports.

Officials believe this partnership will not only enrich the tourist experience but also create new livelihood opportunities for local communities. “We are looking at a future where visitors to Sikkim can also explore Assam’s wildlife trails and river cruises, and vice versa,” Limboo stated, underscoring the potential for a complete package of the Northeast’s diverse natural and cultural heritage.

Key to this collaboration are joint initiatives around wildlife and adventure tourism. For example, tourists heading to Assam’s renowned Kaziranga and Manas National Parks could be cross-promoted to Sikkim for treks like the Goechala trail or rafting on the Teesta river. Similarly, Sikkim’s visitors would be encouraged to explore Assam’s rich biodiversity. Chaudhary, an expert in river cruises, highlighted that these integrated packages would incentivize longer stays, creating a “win-win model.”

Beyond tourism packages, the meeting also explored exchange programs for guides, tour operators, and entrepreneurs to foster a deeper understanding and collaboration. Proposals for joint cultural festivals and promotional campaigns were also on the table, setting the stage for a new chapter in regional tourism. The synergy between Assam and Sikkim is poised to not only attract more visitors but also firmly establish the Northeast as a premier, holistic travel destination on the global map.
