Assam: Silchar Medical College Cracks Down on Illegal Medical Supply Racket
Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on illegal activities, authorities at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) have apprehended a middleman accused of selling medical supplies at inflated prices within the hospital premises. The move signals a firm stance against corrupt practices and aims to protect patients from exploitation.
The incident came to light when Deputy Superintendent Dr. Rituraj Thakuria personally caught the suspect, identified as Yadam Tanti, near the Dialysis Unit. Tanti was found carrying a substantial quantity of medical equipment, including catheters, and was allegedly attempting to negotiate a sale with a patient’s family. Acting swiftly, Dr. Thakuria detained Tanti, who was later handed over to the police for further investigation.
According to SMCH Superintendent Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, the presence of middlemen—commonly referred to as “dalaals”—has been a recurring problem within the hospital. Addressing the media, Dr. Gupta revealed that the arrest followed a tip-off regarding suspicious individuals operating on the premises. During interrogation, Tanti reportedly confessed to being involved in the illegal sale of medical supplies for the past three to four months. He also disclosed the names of drug distributors and medical shop owners allegedly connected to the racket.
Hospital authorities have shared the information with law enforcement agencies and are pushing for stringent legal action against those involved. Dr. Gupta emphasized that while the hospital is committed to rooting out corruption, the absence of formal complaints from victims often weakens legal proceedings. He urged patients and their families to come forward and report such activities to strengthen the case against those exploiting vulnerable patients.
Reaffirming the hospital’s dedication to maintaining a corruption-free environment, Dr. Gupta assured that SMCH will continue to work closely with law enforcement to eliminate any malpractice within its facilities. The recent action underscores the hospital’s resolve to uphold transparency and protect the welfare of its patients.
