Assam: Singer Anya Brahma Faces Backlash Over Bodo Folk Fusion Song

Guwahati: Singer Anya Brahma has found herself at the center of controversy following the release of her new Bodo folk fusion track, Tafli Bona, on her YouTube channel. The song, which blends modern music with a traditional Bodo folk tune, has drawn sharp criticism from Bodo music enthusiasts, who accuse her of distorting the song’s cultural authenticity.

At the heart of the backlash is the claim that Anya Brahma remixed the folk song without obtaining permission from Dhireswar Baro Narzi, the original collector of the tune. The song was previously popularized by renowned Bodo folk singer Bimola Baro. Many in the Bodo music community argue that her fusion version disregards the cultural and musical essence of the original composition.

In response to the criticism, Anya Brahma defended her creative approach, asserting that folk songs traditionally have no fixed lyrics and can be interpreted by anyone. She clarified that her intention was not to disrespect Bodo heritage but to introduce Bodo folk music to a broader audience through a modern lens.

However, her justification has not eased concerns among cultural guardians. Reacting to the controversy, noted actor and dramatist Pabitra Rabha criticized Brahma’s rendition. “It is a mistake to alter a folk song in a way that destroys its traditional essence. Folk songs should be performed with traditional instruments, and in this case, none were used. As guardians of folk traditions, we have a responsibility to preserve Bodo culture’s rich musical heritage,” Rabha remarked.

The debate has sparked wider discussions on the balance between cultural preservation and musical innovation. While some argue that contemporary adaptations help bring folk music to younger generations, others insist that such modifications dilute the cultural legacy. As the controversy unfolds, the Bodo music community remains divided on whether folk traditions should remain untouched or evolve with modern influences.
