Assam: Sivasagar Administration Summons 27 Indigenous Leaders Amid Rising Tensions

Guwahati, August 26, 2024: In a decisive move to preempt potential unrest, the Sivasagar District Administration has issued summons to 27 leaders from various indigenous organizations, following a series of incidents that have raised concerns over regional stability. The action, led by Executive Magistrate Nakib Sayeed Baruah, reflects a proactive approach to maintaining peace and preventing any disruptions to law and order.

The leaders, representing several prominent indigenous groups and student unions, are accused of participating in unlawful assemblies and using high-decibel speaker systems to incite tensions between different communities. Among those summoned are Basanta Gogoi, President of the All Tai Ahom Students Union (ATASU), and Sringkhal Chaliha, Administrative Secretary of Bir Lachit Sena Asom. These individuals allegedly played key roles in inciting local minority communities and orchestrating the illegal shutdown of businesses in Sivasagar.

The summons, issued under Section 164(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), requires these leaders to appear before the Executive Magistrate on August 25, 2024, to justify their actions. Additionally, the directive imposes a bond of Rs 2.5 lakh with a surety of Rs 50,000, ensuring their commitment to maintaining peace for the next six months. Failure to comply with these conditions could result in severe legal consequences, including possible arrest and fines.

Dubbed ‘Operation Bond,’ this initiative highlights the district administration’s resolve to curb any potential escalation of unrest in Sivasagar. Authorities remain vigilant, closely monitoring the situation to ensure the preservation of peace and stability in the region.
