Assam: Six Arrested for Public Cattle Slaughter After Viral Video Sparks Outrage

Guwahati: Six individuals have been arrested in Assam for their involvement in the public slaughter of cattle during a picnic, an act that drew widespread condemnation after a video of the incident went viral on social media.

Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh confirmed the arrests, stating that authorities are taking further legal action against the accused.

DGP GP Singh addressed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Reference viral video of cattle slaughter in a public place – Six accused persons featuring in the video have been arrested, and further lawful action is being taken by @GuwahatiPol @assampolice @CMOfficeAssam.”

The video, shared by users with IDs such as @razz_1065 and @its_me___enjamul, shows the public slaughter, sparking outrage, particularly among Hindu communities for whom cows are considered sacred.

Many have interpreted the deliberate recording and dissemination of the act as an attempt to provoke and hurt religious sentiments, leading to calls for strict action against the perpetrators.

This incident has also drawn attention to the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, which prohibits illegal cattle slaughter and trade in the state.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has consistently advocated for the strict enforcement of the Act, emphasizing its importance in preserving cultural values and maintaining communal harmony.

Despite the stringent provisions of the law, the public nature of this incident and its subsequent sharing on social media have raised concerns about its enforcement and the motivations behind such provocative acts.

Authorities are under pressure to ensure the incident is thoroughly investigated and to reinforce the state’s commitment to upholding the law.
