Assam: South Bank Flyover on the Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge Set to Open in March 2024
Guwahati, 4th November: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on November announced a plan to improve traffic flow in Guwahati by opening the South Bank flyover of the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge project in March 2024. This initiative aims to address the city’s long-standing traffic issues and enhance connectivity.
The South Bank flyover, a vital component of the broader bridge project, will play a crucial role in alleviating the traffic problems that have plagued Guwahati for years.
To provide an effective solution to congestion, a well-designed traffic plan has been implemented to offer commuters smoother and more convenient routes.
As part of the proposed traffic plan, the South Bank flyover will be exclusively dedicated to the public, significantly reducing the traffic load on MG Road. Commuters traveling from Maligaon towards Panbazar will benefit from this newly opened three-lane flyover spanning the Brahmaputra River, providing a faster and more efficient commute, especially during peak hours.
Moreover, a section of the road between Machkowa and Bhootnath will be transformed into a four-lane one-way road, exclusively facilitating traffic heading towards Maligaon. This adjustment not only streamlines traffic but also enhances road safety. Entry and exit points of the flyover will be managed through rotaries, ensuring smooth traffic flow and offering travelers picturesque views of the Brahmaputra River.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized his commitment to resolving Guwahati’s traffic issues, stating, “We are resolutely working to alleviate traffic congestion in Guwahati.”
He added, “The opening of the South Bank flyover represents a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance the city’s traffic infrastructure and improve the quality of life for our citizens.”
