Assam: Spearheading Sports Infrastructure Development in the North East
Guwahati, 16th February: Assam has emerged as a powerhouse of sports in the country, leading the development of sports infrastructure to cater not only to its own needs but also to those of the entire North Eastern region. With a focus on nurturing talent and spreading the sports culture, the state government has undertaken various initiatives, including hosting the Khelo India University Games 2023 across seven states from February 19-29.
The government’s vision extends beyond just hosting events; it aims to make Assam a preferred global destination for sports events and training. Plans are underway to build three National Centres of Excellence and upgrade existing stadiums to international standards. The recent introduction of the High-Performance Sports Training and Rehabilitation Centre at the Sarusajai Sports Complex and a similar facility in Jorhat underscores the state’s commitment to providing advanced sports training and rehabilitation services.
These High-Performance centres are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and advanced sports technology to support athletes from Assam and the entire region. They offer scientific assessment, physiotherapy, rehabilitation services, and advanced conditioning and training programs, ensuring athletes’ mental and physical well-being. Specialized labs, including Motion Analysis Lab, Gait and Biomechanics Lab, Para-Athletes Performance Lab, among others, further enhance the training experience.
The government’s plans also include upgrading the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati to an Olympics-level football stadium, along with the construction of new multi-purpose stadiums in Amingaon and Chandrapur. These stadiums will provide world-class facilities, including players’ hostels, catering to various sporting disciplines.
One notable project, the National Center of Excellence in Guwahati, a collaboration between the Assam government and the Badminton Association of India (BAI), sets a new standard for badminton training. With 24 badminton courts, a modern gymnasium, a player hostel, a yoga center, and a physiotherapy center, this facility is poised to redefine badminton training in India, paving the way for a bright future in the sport.
