Assam: Springtime Devotion Grips Sribhumi as Basanti Puja Celebrations Surge

Guwahati: A wave of spiritual elation has swept through the state as Maha Ashtami dawns, with the city of Sribhumi at its heart experiencing an extraordinary surge in the observance of Basanti Puja.

The traditional springtime worship of Goddess Durga, once primarily confined to the sacred spaces of temples and monasteries, has now blossomed into a widespread household practice.

Sribhumi alone is currently witnessing over a hundred Basanti Pujas, a testament to the growing participation and profound devotion among its residents.

This ancient tradition, aptly named Basanti after the vibrant spring (Basanta) season of its occurrence, holds deep historical significance. It is believed that the King of Chur initiated this auspicious ritual during the spring months centuries ago, seeking divine intervention to protect the populace from diseases and foster overall prosperity.

Adding to the festive spirit, the revered festival of Navratri is also being observed with immense piety by a multitude of devotees. Throughout the nine-day celebration, individuals are engrossed in performing sacred rituals dedicated to the nine distinct forms of Goddess Durga.

The auspicious occasion of Ashtami witnessed the zenith of these spiritual ceremonies, with a notable participation of women engaging in traditional dances during the aarti. Their rhythmic movements and collective prayers served as a powerful expression of devotion to the divine feminine.
