Assam: Sribhumi Civil Hospital Under Scrutiny for Dilapidated Infrastructure and Medicine Shortages

Guwahati: Sribhumi Civil Hospital finds itself at the center of a controversy following serious allegations concerning its rapidly declining infrastructure and a significant scarcity of fundamental medical supplies.

A glaring disparity has been brought to light within the hospital premises, where the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a vital area for critically ill patients, is reportedly operating without essential air conditioning. This absence of a crucial environmental control stands in stark contrast to the office of the hospital principal, which is equipped with the very amenity deemed necessary for patient well-being in the ICU.

Further compounding the concerns are complaints from patients regarding the consistent unavailability of prescribed medications. It has been alleged that despite medical professionals prescribing up to four different types of drugs, the hospital pharmacy routinely dispenses only two, prompting serious inquiries into potential shortages and inefficiencies within the hospital’s supply network.

These troubling inadequacies were brought to public attention during a recent inspection conducted by a delegation headed by Kishore Dey, the President of the Sribhumi BJP City Mandal. The purpose of the delegation’s visit was to assess the prevailing healthcare conditions and engage in discussions with the hospital administration. However, their review revealed significant discrepancies in the hospital’s standards, and sources indicate that a heated confrontation occurred with the acting principal of the facility.

In his address to the media, Kishore Dey expressed profound disappointment and strong condemnation of the ICU’s condition, stating that it was unfit for its intended purpose. He highlighted the contradiction between the government’s ongoing commitment to bolster medicine availability and infrastructure and the unacceptable conditions observed, pointing towards a critical breakdown in local execution and responsibility.

The inspecting delegation has declared its intention to escalate the issue by formally reporting their findings to the local Member of the Legislative Assembly and Minister, Krishnendu Paul, as well as the Guardian Minister. Their aim is to urge immediate and decisive remedial measures to reinstate the quality and uphold the dignity of public healthcare services in the region.
