Assam: Student arrested for ‘seditious poem’ appears Before Golaghat Court
Guwahati: Barshashree Buragohain, an undergraduate student from Assam who was imprisoned last year, appeared before the Golaghat district and sessions court on Tuesday in connection with the case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Buragohain was required to appear in court today by the judge. The court has scheduled the case’s next hearing for March 16.
It should be noted that Barshashree Buragohain, a college student, was imprisoned for posting a poem on Facebook endorsing the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I).
Barshashree Buragohain was arrested and charged under the UAPA on May 18 of last year in Uriamghat of Golaghat district for her post titled “Akou Korim Rashtra Droh” (will again rebel against the nation).
She served 65 days behind bars in the Golaghat Custody.
On July 21, the Gauhati High Court granted bail to Barshashree Buragohain with a number of conditions. Buragohain’s attorney, Atul Dihingia, claimed that the high court placed three conditions to its decision to give her release.
He claims that Buragohain must comply with the investigation and be present whenever the investigating officer requests it. She is not allowed to discuss case details with anyone, and she is also not allowed to repeat the same act, according to Dihingia.
Buragohain was permitted by a judge to take her degree exam, which was held on July 16. She took the test in a setting with strict security measures.
