Assam: Surrendered ULFA cadre Arrested for Extortion in Tinsukia

Guwahati: A man reported to be a surrendered member of the ULFA was arrested for alleged extortion in Tinsukia, Assam on Thursday.

The accused has been identified as arrested Surajit Moran, a surrendered ULFA cadre.

Moran, also known as Koliya, was reportedly using the name of the banned ULFA-I group to demand money from victims.

According to reports, Moran’s extortion racket was uncovered after a tea trader in Nalani, Pengeree, filed a complaint against him.

The trader alleged that Moran had demanded money from him, claiming it was for the treatment of a ULFA-I member.

Acting on the complaint, police arrested another suspect, Mintu Moran, on December 2 last year.

Further investigations revealed Surajit Moran’s involvement in the extortion racket, leading to his arrest.

Surajit Moran has been remanded to judicial custody by Pengeree police. Police are continuing their probe to identify any further links in the extortion network.
