Assam: Suspect in Kokrajhar Robbery Shot During Police Encounter

Guwahati, 1st July: In a significant development following a recent high-profile robbery, police in Kokrajhar, Assam, shot and injured Amir Hussain, a 38-year-old suspect linked to a robbery at the LIC branch. Hussain, hailing from Village No. 3 Bhandara Bijni Manikpur in Chirang district, sustained a bullet wound to his left leg during the operation.

The incident is connected to a daring robbery that took place on June 25 outside Axis Bank in Kokrajhar, where thieves made off with over Rs 34 lakhs. In response, police apprehended four suspects from Chirang, Dhubri, and Kokrajhar districts.

Acting on leads, police conducted a search operation on the night of June 30 at Salakati Bedlangmary Tea Estate. During the operation, Hussain allegedly attempted to flee, prompting officers to open fire. Hussain was subsequently taken to Rupnath Brahma Civil Hospital in Kokrajhar for treatment.

Assam’s Director General of Police, GP Singh, confirmed the developments on social media. “Reference recent robbery of Rs 34 Lacs of LIC from near Axis Bank, Kokrajhar town – Total four persons, including Manager and driver of the cash carrying vehicle, have been arrested from various parts of Assam and nearby state and Rs 21.5 Lacs recovered so far. Well done @KokrajharP led by SP,” he stated.

The police operation and subsequent arrest have brought some relief to the residents of Kokrajhar, as authorities continue their efforts to recover the remaining stolen funds and ensure justice is served.
