Assam: Suspended ASP Denied Bail in Domestic Help Assault Case
Guwahati, 19th October: Subhalakshmi Dutta, the suspended Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), has been denied bail in the case of assaulting her domestic help. The decision was taken by the Gauhati High Court, where Dutta was produced.
Dutta faces accusations of assault and torture by her domestic help, Anima Praja, who belongs to the tea tribe community. The case against Dutta emerged on August 26, and she went absconding. Her maid alleged that Dutta had attempted to murder her and subjected her to severe abuse during her time as a domestic help.
Dutta surrendered on September 9 and was taken into police custody. A court in Nazira, where she was initially produced on September 12, also denied her bail.
Subhalakshmi Dutta was promoted to the position of ASP for Charaideo district but was suspended before she could formally assume the role due to the emergence of this case. She faces charges under several sections of the IPC, including voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful confinement, attempt to murder, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and using a dangerous weapon.
This isn’t the only case of assault associated with Dutta, as a departmental inquiry found that she had physically assaulted a home guard and an armed branch constable in 2019 in Sivasagar district.
