Assam: Teachers Barred from Studying Mid-Career, Permission Now Mandatory
Guwahati, 21th December: The Assam government has prohibited teachers and non-teaching staff in provincialised secondary schools from pursuing further studies or obtaining degrees while in service without prior permission. Provincialised schools are those taken over by the government, usually in remote areas or serving backward communities. The directive, based on an old clause from the Assam Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1965, was communicated by Secondary Education Director Mamata Hojai to the Inspector of Schools statewide.
Hojai emphasized that pursuing educational or professional qualifications without permission is a violation of service rules. She instructed the initiation of departmental proceedings against staff in provincialised secondary schools who acquired academic or professional qualifications during their service period without obtaining permission. Penalties prescribed in The Assam Services (Discipline & Appeal) Rules, 1964 may be imposed upon those found in violation of the rule after following due procedure.
