Assam: Tension Erupts in Duliajan Over Arrest of Former AASU General Secretary Shankarjyoti Baruah
Guwahati: Tension flared up in Duliajan following the arrest of Shankarjyoti Baruah, former General Secretary of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). The arrest has sparked widespread protests, with various parties and organizations strongly criticizing the police’s action.
The police’s decision to handcuff Baruah and parade him around has been particularly contentious, with many viewing it as an excessive measure.
The Bir Lachit Sena has been demanding Baruah’s unconditional release, and protests have been held in Duliajan.
Various political organizations have come out onto the streets, condemning the police’s action and questioning their role in the arrest. They have criticized the Assam police for arresting Baruah without sufficient reason, particularly when he was on his way to file a case in court.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Assam has directed the Dibrugarh district police superintendent to ensure that Baruah is not handcuffed under any circumstances. This development has added to the controversy surrounding the police’s handling of the situation.
Protesters have accused the government of orchestrating a political conspiracy against Baruah, with some slogans echoing the sentiment that “an Assamese will not be cowed down.” The situation remains tense, with many demanding justice for Baruah and accountability from the police.
