The situation escalated after misinformation spread on social media, with several Facebook pages falsely reporting that the dam would be opened on Sunday. Contrary to these claims, no water was released, sparking unrest among the local population.
The release of water from the Kujiya River dam is a tradition that occurs every year on the Sunday following Chhath Puja, signaling the start of the community fishing event, which draws participants from across the district. This long-standing cultural practice brings together various communities, reinforcing shared traditions.
In response to the unrest, local residents have called for the identification and punishment of those responsible for spreading false information. They have urged authorities to take strict action to prevent such incidents in the future and maintain public order.
