Assam: Tension in Guwahati’s Forest Gate as Unauthorised Businesses Evicted from IOCL Land

Guwahati, 30th January: Tension escalated in Guwahati’s Forest Gate as unauthorised businesses and encroachments allegedly constructed on Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) land were evicted in an administrative operation conducted by Guwahati Municipal Corporation at Noonmati’s Forest Gate on Tuesday.

The eviction drive, which removed unlawful establishments, drew criticism from locals who claim to have received no prior notice, leaving them unsupported. The incident has heightened tensions in the area.

The eviction-related concerns echo a recent incident in Goalpara, Assam, where an elderly man named Boyat Ali, 55, reportedly succumbed to extreme cold post-eviction. Boyat was a resident of the evicted Pancharatna NC village in Goalpara.

On January 10, around 50 families in the Pancharatna Reserve Forest area were left homeless after an eviction drive against illegal encroachers. Reports suggest these families had unlawfully occupied the forest land, leading to the construction of homes and other illegal structures.
