Assam: Tensions Erupt at Kokrajhar Polling Booth; BPF Worker Detained for Alleged Rigging

Guwahati, 7th May: Tensions flared at a polling booth located in Science College, Kokrajhar town, amidst the ongoing Lok Sabha polls in Assam, as allegations of rigging surfaced, leading to the arrest of a worker from the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

The incident unfolded when a group of BPF workers, accompanied by Sewly Mohilary, the wife of BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary, arrived at the polling booth. A dispute ensued, involving Sewly Mohilary and some BPF workers, resulting in heightened tensions.

Authorities intervened, with police reportedly taking a BPF worker into custody amid accusations of rigging. Additionally, Sewly Mohilary was allegedly prevented from proceeding further by law enforcement officials.

Meanwhile, amidst the electoral activity, Khampha Borgyari, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) candidate in the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency, exercised his voting privilege at The Basubari Primary School polling station in Chirang on May 7.

Furthermore, Assam cabinet minister Urkhao Gaura Brahma, accompanied by his family, participated in the voting process at their ancestral village’s Batabari ME School polling station.

With anticipation surrounding the election outcome, the NDA government is hopeful for a favorable result. The NDA-backed candidate from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), Jayant Basumatary, is anticipated to secure victory, adding further intrigue to the electoral landscape in Assam.
