Assam: Three-Day Gas Leak Near Makum Sparks Safety Fears, OIL Criticised for Inaction
Guwahati: A gas leak from an Oil India Limited (OIL) pipeline near Makum in Assam’s Tinsukia district has triggered widespread concern, with the leakage reportedly continuing unchecked for the past three days. The pipeline, situated along the crucial Makum-Barekuri road, has become a flashpoint for criticism amid fears of a potential disaster.
Local residents have raised alarm over the strong odour of gas permeating the area, voicing frustration over the lack of any visible containment efforts or public advisories from OIL. Despite the potential danger to both nearby communities and passing vehicles, there has been no official communication or emergency response from the company, sparking outrage across civil society.
The Makum Regional Students’ Union has publicly condemned the state-owned enterprise for what it described as a “reckless and irresponsible” failure to respond. The student body demanded immediate action to stop the leak and implement preventive measures to avoid future incidents. “The continuous emission of gas not only endangers the environment but also puts human lives at risk. Oil India Limited must act responsibly,” said a spokesperson from the Union.
As tensions rise, the absence of a formal statement from OIL has only deepened public unease. With no clarity on the cause of the leak or an estimated timeline for repair, pressure is mounting on both company officials and district authorities to address the hazard without further delay.
