Assam: Tinsukia Police Nab Two, Seize Heroin in Early Morning Swoop

Tinsukia: In a significant breakthrough against the drug menace, police personnel from Lekhapani and Jagun outposts, operating under the Lekhapani Police Station in Tinsukia district, successfully apprehended two known drug traffickers and recovered a substantial quantity of heroin in an early morning operation on Tuesday.

Acting on precise intelligence, authorities intercepted a Maruti Eeco vehicle (registration number AS 23 AJ 7772) near the Five Mile area. A thorough inspection by law enforcement officials led to the discovery of 52 grams of suspected heroin, cleverly hidden within a concealed compartment beneath the seatbelt mechanism of the vehicle.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Raju Cheyi, 38, and Bishnu Cheyi, 31, both residents of Pengeri, a locality within Tinsukia district. Police sources indicate that the seized consignment is believed to have originated from Manipur and was destined for Jagun, a known transit point for illegal drug trafficking in the region.

Investigators suspect that the recovered heroin may represent only a portion of a much larger shipment. As a precautionary measure, the vehicle has been impounded and is currently undergoing a meticulous dismantling and inspection process with the assistance of mechanical experts, aimed at uncovering any additional hidden narcotics.

Authorities confirmed that further legal proceedings against the accused are underway. This latest crackdown underscores the ongoing and intensified efforts by law enforcement agencies to dismantle the intricate drug trafficking networks operating along the crucial Assam–Manipur corridor.
