Assam: Tipkai River’s Erosion Claims Homes and Livelihoods

Guwahati, 20th June: Sadhubhasha Part I village in West Bilasipara, Dhubri, faces a dire crisis due to severe riverbank erosion caused by the Tipkai River. Continuous rainfall in recent days has exacerbated the situation, leading to the loss of several homes, including those built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This devastation has particularly impacted economically disadvantaged households in the area.

The rising waters of the Tipkai River have left many impoverished residents of the char area in a precarious state. In the Athani revenue circle of West Bilasipara, Dhubri district, 27 families below the poverty line have fallen victim to the aggressive erosion. Responding to the urgent need, Revenue Circle Officer Lat Mandal Nazrul Islam has compiled detailed data on the losses suffered by these families.

Local authorities, including the Assam government, District Commissioner Dibakar Nath of Dhubri, and MP Rakibul Hussain, must act swiftly and decisively to support the affected villagers during this challenging time.
