Assam: Tiwa Autonomous Council CEM Denies Corruption Allegations, Fails to Provide Clear Answers

Guwahati: Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Tiwa Autonomous Council, Jibon Chandra Konwar, faced mounting scrutiny on March 24 after failing to address corruption allegations during a press conference. Despite his attempts to dismiss the claims as baseless, his inability to offer concrete answers to journalists’ questions has intensified concerns about the council’s financial transparency.

The controversy began on March 6, when the Cheniram Malang faction of the Tiwa Students’ Union accused the council of financial misconduct. At a press conference held at the Dispur Press Club, the faction alleged that the council had procured essential materials for public welfare at prices far above prevailing market rates, raising suspicions of corruption.

In an effort to counter these claims, Konwar held a press briefing where he rejected the accusations. However, when questioned about the alleged inflated purchases, he struggled to provide direct explanations. Rather than engaging with the media’s queries, he issued a press release and avoided further discussion, leaving reporters dissatisfied.

The CEM’s evasive stance has sparked further speculation, with critics calling for greater transparency and an independent investigation into the council’s financial practices. As the controversy grows, public pressure is mounting for the Tiwa Autonomous Council to offer a detailed and transparent account of its expenditures.
