Assam TMC Chief Warns of Dictatorial Drift with New Criminal Laws

Guwahati, 2nd July: Assam Trinamool Congress (TMC) president Ripun Bora has strongly criticized the implementation of three new criminal laws effective from July 1, alleging that these laws are pushing the country towards a dictatorial regime. In a post on social media platform X, Bora condemned the laws as a manifestation of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) governance, describing them as a “gift” to the nation following the BJP’s consecutive terms in power at the Centre.

Expressing deep concern over potential human rights violations under the new legislation, Bora cautioned the public to remain vigilant. “Let us all be prepared and alert that in the coming days there will be gross violations of human rights under these three new laws,” he emphasized.

These remarks from the TMC leader come amid widespread debates and discussions regarding the implications and effects of the newly enacted criminal codes. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced the registration of the first case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, at a police station in Nagaon, underscoring the state government’s enforcement of the new legal framework.
