Assam to Begin Major Embankment Construction Post-Monsoon, Announces Water Resources Minister
Guwahati, 7th July: Assam’s Water Resources Minister, Piyush Hazarika, announced the commencement of a substantial water infrastructure project post-monsoon, involving the construction of 220 kilometers of embankment across the state, with 26 kilometers allocated for Darrang district.
Speaking at the Darrang District Commissioner’s office, Minister Hazarika outlined the project’s timeline and scope. The Water Resources Department aims to complete the 220 kilometers of embankment construction, leaving only 100 kilometers to be finished by next year.
Acknowledging the plight of residents between the river and Mathauri affected by floods, Hazarika noted that while special arrangements for these populations cannot currently be made, the broader infrastructure improvements are expected to mitigate future flood impacts.
Following a review meeting at the Darrang Commissioner’s Office, Minister Hazarika, accompanied by MLA Basanta Das, MP Dilip Saikia, and Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Chairman Gurujyoti Das, conducted a field inspection of erosion and flood-affected areas in Gerimari and Moamari near Mangaldoi.
This visit highlights the state government’s commitment to enhancing water management and infrastructure resilience, aiming to address the persistent flood and erosion challenges faced by Assam.
