Assam to Get First Wildlife Health and Research Institute in Dibrugarh

Guwahati: Assam is set to bolster its wildlife conservation efforts with the establishment of its first Institute of Wildlife Health and Research in Dinjan, Dibrugarh district. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially announced the project, which is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 250 crore and will span across 120 bighas of land.

Taking to social media platform X, CM Sarma highlighted the institute’s vision, stating, “Where Science meets Conservation. Assam’s first Institute of Wildlife Health and Research is coming up at Dinjan at a cost of Rs 250 crore.” He further elaborated that this ambitious initiative aims to safeguard the state’s rich biodiversity through “cutting-edge diagnostics, forensics and policy support.”

The groundwork for this significant institution was laid back in February 2021 by former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The institute’s primary objective is to contribute to the preservation of Assam’s diverse ecosystems and to provide a robust platform for scientists and researchers, both domestic and international, to conduct vital studies and research. Beyond academic pursuits, the institute is also slated to play a crucial role in wildlife crisis management, translocation initiatives, wildlife informatics, and the formulation of public policy and cooperation related to conservation.
