Assam to Hold Bypolls in September for Five Assembly Seats Vacant Post Lok Sabha Elections

Guwahati, July 19, 2024: The Election Commission has announced that bypolls for five vacant assembly constituencies in Assam will be conducted in September. These seats became vacant following the Lok Sabha elections held between April 19 and June 1, 2024, where the incumbents were elected to the Parliament.

The constituencies affected are Samaguri, Behali, Dholai, Sidli, and Bongaigaon. Among these, Samaguri was held by the Congress, while the others were controlled by the BJP and its allies, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

Unlike the 2019 bypolls, which occurred after a five-month gap, this year’s bypolls will take place just three months after the Lok Sabha elections. The bypolls will be conducted using the pre-delimitation boundaries, as the Election Commission’s final delimitation report was published on August 11. This report revised the nomenclature of 19 assembly constituencies and one parliamentary constituency but will not affect the upcoming bypolls.

The Commission is preparing for a smooth electoral process, ensuring that the bypolls will be fair and transparent. Results are expected to be declared by the end of October.
