Assam to Launch Constellation of State-Specific Satellites for Real-Time Monitoring
Guwahati: In a landmark move aimed at bolstering technological infrastructure and enhancing governance, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced plans to deploy a constellation of four to five state-specific satellites.
These satellites, each projected to cost between Rs 60-70 crore, are designed to provide real-time data crucial for addressing pressing challenges facing the state. The initiative, revealed during discussions on the Assam Budget 2025 in the Assembly, signifies a significant leap towards technological self-reliance.
The satellites will serve a multitude of purposes, including real-time flood and disaster monitoring, a critical need for a state prone to severe flooding. They will also enhance surveillance capabilities to combat illegal migration and drug trafficking, issues of paramount importance to Assam’s security. Furthermore, the technology will be deployed for wildlife tracking within the state’s national parks, contributing to conservation efforts, and for improving agricultural practices and road network management. The Assam government is currently in advanced negotiations with IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center) to finalize the satellite constellation project, marking a pivotal step in integrating advanced technology into state governance.
Simultaneously, during his presentation of the Assam Budget 2024, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized a broader vision for the state, focusing on economic growth, technological advancement, and sustainability. He refuted claims of a populist, election-driven budget, reiterating his government’s commitment to empowering the poor and middle class and positioning Assam as a leading state in India. As part of this vision, he also announced the launch of an Assam-specific satellite in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). This satellite, specifically tailored to address the state’s vulnerabilities, will play a crucial role in flood prediction, border management, and supporting the agricultural sector, further solidifying Assam’s commitment to leveraging space technology for the benefit of its citizens.
