Assam to Notify Poba Reserve Forest as Wildlife Sanctuary

Guwahati, August 31, 2024 — The Assam government has announced its decision to notify the Poba Reserve Forest as a wildlife sanctuary, according to Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary. This move, which reflects the state government’s commitment to conserving natural resources and biodiversity, will bring the newly named Poba Wildlife Sanctuary under protection, covering an area of 257.29 square kilometers.

The new sanctuary will include the Poba Reserve Forest, Kabu Chapri Proposed Reserve Forest, and surrounding riverine areas. This region serves as a crucial migratory route for wildlife, particularly elephants, linking important conservation areas such as D’ Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary, Kabu Chapri Proposed Reserve Forest, and Dibru-Saikhowa National Park.

Poba Reserve Forest is recognized as the second most significant elephant migration corridor across the Brahmaputra River, with herds of 70-80 elephants regularly traversing the area. Male elephants use these routes almost throughout the year, underlining the forest’s importance for their survival.

In addition to elephants, Poba Reserve Forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including species like the slow loris, capped langur, and wild boar. The forest also supports about 45 species of birds and reptiles, and its rivers host diverse fish species. The region is renowned for its orchids, making it a focal point for nature enthusiasts and researchers.

This new designation as a wildlife sanctuary aims to ensure the protection of the area’s unique biodiversity while promoting sustainable development.
